Beneath problem solving

IMG_5986Often we find it easier to think our way around things rather than to feel our way through them: what can we do to pull ourselves out of a bad mood? What can we buy, remove, or repair that will reduce or solve a loved one’s anger or sadness?

In retrospect, I realize I have spent many hours problem solving emotional facts I just needed to feel. I know now that my frequent labors to understand what went wrong, while somewhat useful, often were distractions from feeling the sadness and disappointment necessary to heal and move on. It’s all very human. No one wants to fell pain, especially when you can’t quite point to a specific cut or wound. So it is with the heart. There’s nothing to show or stitch up, yet everything is affected.

The truth is that while analyzing and strategizing and preparing ourselves can occupy our minds, and may even help prevent us from being hurt the same way twice. There is no substitute for giving the wound air, which in the case of the heart means saying deeply, without aversion or self-pity, “Ouch”. From “The book of awakening” by Mark Nepo. This is a favorite text of mine, I often read it as a reminder to feel, not to solve. I am so used to solve both my own and others problem, it is part of my DNA both professional and personal. I often do it without thinking but practice makes perfect… //Marianne

Half time

Dreaming

DSC_5903“All men dream, but not all equally. Those who dream by night, in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake to find it was all vanity. But the dreamers of the day are dangerous, for they may act their dreams with open eyes, and make things happen,” T.E. Lawrence.
I apologize for my absent, I long to be able to post both short and long articles but my right shoulder, and arm needs a rest to be able to heal. I am here in spirit and I hope to be back very soon in writing as well. I will also answer your comments as soon as possible. Until then, take care of yourself! //Marianne

The unexamined life

DSC_5553

“The unexamined life is not worth living”, Socrates. This quote might seem a bit harsh but it is quote to ponder over. What happens if we don’t examine our lives, and what happens if we do it every six to twelve months? When we examine our life, we get the opportunity to analyse what is working, and what is not working. We also get the chance to figure out why we sometimes repeat the same mistakes over and over again. It gives us the option to take control and redesign our lives. This is the positive side of examine our lives. When we do the opposite there is always the possibility that we loose direction. Instead we let other people, and external events decide what we should do, think and feel. That is a mistake. Which part of your life would you like to examine today? Which part of your life do you need to take a closer look at? //Marianne

Life

DSC_5686

How do you choose to live your life on a daily basis?
What do you choose to value in life?
We are not always taught how to live our lives, instead we just do what everyone else is doing without reflecting if it is a good idea or not. That is the easy way out. Choosing to engage in your own life every day can be a challenge; at the same time it can transform a life to be better, stronger and more positive. Maybe it will transform your life, if you give it a chance.  //Marianne

March

DSC_5460

To my surprise it is already March. What happened to January and February? It is hard to believe that today is the 64th day of 2013. What has happened so far with your goals? And what has happened with my three major goals: work – relationship – health? Lets start with my health. I exercise every day, I eat three healthy meals a day and I no longer cut corners with my sleep. It is easy, it is fun and I am totally committed to change bad habits into healthy habits.

Relationships: here I have two goals. Falling in love and improving existing relationships. Falling in love is of course a process that involves one more person, and not something I can control. My goal is to be open-minded.  To say yes more often than I say no, and I’m happy to report that the yes side is leading. A good relationship needs a lot of love. When you travel a lot like I do, it is sometimes difficult to maintain your relationships. Or it used to be, nowadays there is no longer any excuse to be absent when Internet reaches most parts of the world. 2013 I have made time in my calendar for private emails once a week, Facebook a couple times a week, and postcard once a month. I also use Skype as often as possible due to different time zones.

Work: I am still working too many hours, but not as much as before and my goal is to work only Monday to Friday. I have problems reaching the targets I have set, and I am surprised. After all I am a goals specialist, and all I can say at the moment: it is an interesting experience for me not reaching my goals. I give myself this week to analyse what is not working, and why it is not working. What has happened so far with your goals? // Marianne
